It is easier to say that you appreciate what others do good to you. It is the acknowledgment of an action performed to make you feel light and acceptable. Most of the time you appreciate because it is favorable to you like a help, a gift, a motivational advice, or praising your physical beauty. It is “word meets action”. Action as what has been done.
To reciprocate is to respond to what you appreciate. This time, it is “action meets action”. When someone receives a chocolate from another friend, she or he will say “thank you…I appreciate it”. But when that friend comes back and reciprocates with something, the appreciation begins to flow. To reciprocate someone because you appreciate what she or he has done, it establishes a relationship. It sends a signal of continuity and interest.
People appreciate the love of God (John 3:16). But how many reciprocate to that given love?
A husband appreciates a gift from his wife on a no occasion. But how does that husband reciprocate to his wife?
To appreciate is an expression of gratitude. To reciprocate is to appreciate gratefully with action.
