A Treat To My Mom. Happy Mother’s Day!

I was watching game 2 of Lakers and Rockets at the business lounge of Cathay Pacific in Los Angeles airport while chatting with friends on YM, updating my status in Facebook, Twittering about some interesting topics, microblogging about the game, and joking with my friend John about Ruth’s Chris restaurant along Flamingo Rd. in Las Vegas where each of us had 16 oz. rib eye steak for dinner. And as per my previous FB status, having such amount of meal at 12mn is no joke.

At 10:30pm (1:30pm in Manila), upon seeing the status of my friends on YM, what caught my attention was the status of Tracy Abad of Jam 88.3. She’s giving gift certificates from Outback Steakhouse. So I asked her how. It’s not because I wanted another rib eye. But it’s because I want to treat my mom a dinner on Mother’s Day.

After giving her the reason why I want to treat my mom, I am not sure if I won since the rule is to send the reason via SMS and I did it on YM. The time I was waiting for the next response, I had to wrap up already since the boarding was at 11:20pm. I am writing this note while on board to Hong Kong.

I have much deeper reason why I want to treat my mom on Mother’s Day whether I win the GC or not.

While onboard, I decided to write this short letter for my mom as an acknowledgment and remembering her on Mother’s Day.

“Dear Mom,

It’s really hard to stop my tears while thinking of what you have been doing for me lately. I am composing this letter right to my seat while flying to Hong Kong to relax since what we all did in Las Vegas and LA was work.

I want to thank you for your attention and extra effort you have been doing to me lately. I truly appreciate it. I know that when I was still a teenager I would always break the rules at home. When you asked me to be home at 8pm, I got by past midnight by either sneaking in to my room’s window or knocking on my brother’s window.

I know I’m independent-minded and not really afraid to start from the beginning. Ten years ago I left home and lived in a condo in Katipunan. Two years later, I went to California and stayed there for almost a year. Then I went back to our house in Caloocan. But after 2 years, I left again and this time I bought my own house without you and dad knowing it. I always make surprises. Don’t you ever think? ☺

I thank you for teaching me how to memorize the poem ‘Tree’ when I was 6 years old. I know it is hard to raise 6 kids with me being the eldest who would always flip out the house rules. ☺ Thank you for going to my house to see if my sister (who’s now in Illinois) and I are ok. Thank you for preparing my lunch box (since my sister is away) even if we have free meals in the office. Thank you for calling the ‘plantsadora’ for pressing all my clothes the day before I flew to America to watch Pacquiao fight. Thank you for taking care of my house while I’m away.

Children may all say that their moms are the best. For me you are not only the best. You are extra special and one of the best of the bests. What makes you extra special is the fact that I witness you humbly serving God in our VCF church as a volunteer usher with my dad during church services, you faithfully read the Bible, and I know you always include me in your prayers. It’s your relationship with God that makes you the best of the bests and extra special.

I want you to know that I am proud of you. Happy Mother’s Day, Mom!”

To all the mothers and friends I tagged in this note, Happy Mother’s Day to all of you!

And for DJ Tracy and Jam 88.3, you may think that your YM status or announcing a contest on air is simple but it may probably be an alert to your many and multitasking listeners to pause and think a thousand reasons why we should treat our moms whether you give away GC or not on this very special occasion. Just keep it up!

So DJ Tracy, did I win? haha
